Hey Blossoms,

There is no surprise I truly love a bold lip. Just check out some of my past FOTD blog posts AND YouTube makeup tutorials. There seems to not be a single color I wouldn’t wear.

I remember when it wasn’t like that.

One of the first bold lip colors I wore was red. It seemed that no matter what shade of red I chose it was too much and so the first few tries were truly epic fails. I had major difficulties just wearing the color and getting over my “I’m sure I look ridiculous, everyone is watching me & I totally look like a clown” fear.

I decided to take a step back and start with a gloss. A sheer tint of the color, I so desperately wanted to conquer, seemed the way to go. And it worked! I’ve been using the gloss first method to introduce & wean myself into each and every lip color I’ve been interested in wearing since.

And the rest is lipstory!!!

I have a few top red lipglosses to help you over come your red lip fear. I used them all in this order:

Those glosses are

Wet&Wild
Black Radiance
NYX
Dior

Wet & Wild lipgloss in Cherry Glaze (562B)

Swatch of Wet & Wild Lip Gloss

This was definitely the FIRST red lip gloss I ever tried. I laugh now because I actually thought this was “bold” on me. For the makeup beginner this is an awesome start. Smooth, easy to apply, a little sticky but not horribly so and not long wearing but I didn’t mind reapplying. A very sheer red tint to your lips, but hey it’s a start.

Black Radiance Ice Angel Lip Gloss in Scarlet

Swatch of Black Radiance “Scarlet” Lip Gloss (L) , Wet & Wild “Cherry Glaze (R)

Black Radiance has an awesome line of lip glosses. When I felt comfortable enough to up the ante and go for a deeper shade of red I went to their “Ice Angel” collection. Glides on super smooth, non sticky, long lasting, with a minty zest and smell upon application this was a favorite for awhile. Best yet, this gloss can be layered. The swatch is 2 coats thick. I usually wore this gloss as a light wash on my lips. A deeper red than the Wet & Wild but still not “in your face” color.

NYX Lip Gloss in “Sunrise”

NYX “Sunrise” (L), Black Radiance “Scarlet” (M), Wet & Wild “Cherry Glaze” (R)

NYX is one of my favorite brands when it comes to lip glosses, so naturally I checked out one of their red lip glosses. I truly loved this color and wore it often. It was a brighter red than my Black Radiace “Scarlet” gloss and I wore NYX “Sunrise” opaque. It was my first introduction to a true “bold” lip. At the time I wasn’t into matte finishes and so glosses were my very best friend. Shiny (but not too shiny) finish, long lasting, smells great and buttery smooth. I now own more of these lip glosses than I can count.

Dior Creme De Gloss in 845

Dior Creme De Gloss “845″ (L), NYX “Sunrise”, Black Radiance “Scarlet”, Wet & Wild “Cherry Glaze”

Dior Creme De Gloss “845″ is NOT for the faint of heart. I acquired this lip gloss after winning Celebrity Makeup Artist, Ricky Wilson, Couture Beauty Makeup Contest. See my entry that won and all the awesome makeup goodies I received HERE! It couldn’t have arrived at a better time. When I want a classic red lip I wear this. A cream lipstick, truly this is has BOLD written all over it! If you can wear this lip gloss you can rock ANY red lip stick. It’s super BRIGHT, opaque, with a gorgeous sheen, long lasting, and smooth. Your lips will fall in love! No pun intended!

An honorable mention lip gloss (more of a lip color) is OCC’s “NSFW”. Since I’ve weaned into red lips with these 4 lip glosses I now comfortably wear red lipstick!! Even matte finishes! MAC Ruby Woo is one of my favs. Check out one of my favorite neutral eye/ bold red lip looks using Dior “845″ & MAC Ruby Woo HERE

So there is no need to fear. Sherry Blossom is here! LOL. Seriously, try this method and be well on your way to getting over your “wearing red lipstick” fear. Stand out, be bold and rock those BRIGHT lips! I did, I love it and I’m not turning back!

Great post sherry, I think it’s important for beginners to see that you can wear red but it doesn’t have to always start off being the baddest and the boldest.

I love red lipstick…it’s hot, it’s SEXY, and it’s bold! I have found very few colors that complement my skin tone. I found a Cover Girl, but it’s more of a light red. I think I can pull off a really fire engine one with my skin tone, but alas I have yet to find one. I may need to change that and get on the hunt for one.

I haven’t found a red that I like yet. Won’t stop looking though! Cute shades you have… & lucky you for winning a contest!

I had to send this to my best friend. She refuses to wear anything other than brown. She has that same fear. Hopefully, she will try a gloss.

Thank you for your post. I’ve always wanted to wear red but have been afraid. I’m dressing up for Halloween this year as Red Riding Hood and will be buying liptstick for that. But would like to be able to work it into my wardrobe. Thanks for the gloss idea. Cheers.

Last night, I purchased the Scarlet lipgloss from Black
Radaince (I’m also afraid of bright colors;I usually only wear
earth tones) well I came home and tried it on and I’m to scared to wear it out :( :(

Awesome! Purchasing was the first step and trying it on was the 2nd..try a light wash of it or mix a drop of it with your fav lip balm for a tinted balm….try wearing it to the grocery store or someplace random…its all about your inner confidence.
